I nearly swooned at the dazzling display of baubles and trinkets that filled the stout coffer. Was it the fermented seed I consumed at dinner, I wondered, or was it the glittering presentation?
Though I have no need of such finery, I did not wish to be rude to such a gracious host. So I made my selection carefully.
There among the gleaming treasure the dull glint of a small amulet attracted my eye. Though scratched and faded, it was to be my choice.
As I lifted it from the chest he nodded. “You have chosen well,” he said, “and, yet, I’d sooner you choose another...”
